The treatment and rehabilitation of laminitis has been, and will remain, a central issue with farriers and equine Veterinary surgeons. Through all research and applied techniques, it is established that the support and treatment provided at the onset of an attack, is crucial. At this point professional co-operation and communication between Farrier and veterinary surgeon is of paramount importance to a successful outcome.

The initial application of emergency support via the frog has been universally accepted as means of reducing trauma and encouraging initial capsular stability. With the provision of effective management,  the trauma will subside allowing rehabilitation speeded with the use of  Equine Digit Support System.

Deep litter beds provide comfortable uniform support as will a simple rolled bandage or a commercially available "Lilly pad". These systems are plagued with the problem of providing specific support. Direct pressure points of inadequate support result in pressure necrosis and local ischema further complicating this acute condition.

The TFP Styrofoam Support System has been developed as a low trauma, low risk easily applied emergency first aid support, that addresses natural weight bearing issues of the chronic laminitic. Styrofoam is a modern lightweight material which at the correct density will provide comfortable uniform support for the frog sole and bars in the caudal 2/3 of the foot.

Minimal foot preparation is required for application and by following the instructions, a thick Styrofoam pad is attached to the hoof with special adhesive tape. The initial appearance may be cumbersome but as compression takes place, a willingness to move will be observed. The Styrofoam Support System allows the animal to nominate it’s most comfortable supported standing position. Styrofoam becomes much denser when compressed providing superior uniform support.

Depending on the activity of the animal, desired compression of the first pad takes 24-48 hours whereby a second visit will be necessary to remove and remodel the Styrofoam pad, forming a perfect mirror image of the caudal aspect of the sole, frog and bars. The remodeled and adjusted pad is then refitted insitu.

A second Styrofoam pad is then fitted and the process repeated. In most cases two pads per foot are sufficient, however more extreme cases can necessitate further applications until clinical stability is achieved.

The TFP Styrofoam Support System comprises of four Styrofoam pads, adhesive tape and instructions, packaged in a neat storage box and is only  available to registered farriers and veterinary surgeons.

The TFP Styrofoam Support System is not a cure for Laminitis and should be applied in consultation with a Veterinary Surgeon.

The System is available in a full range of sizes
