I work at "cost" at a local sanctuary. I have enjoyed the challenge for fifteen years. I work for the animals, not the people. I have had the privilege to help may animals that would have been euthanised for purely commercial or human reasons. Quality of life is paramount and no animal has suffered unnecessarily, some may limp but when you look in there eye's they are happy. Here is some pictures of Danny.
Danny arrived as a pure neglect case and his feet curled up. If you look at his knock kneed conformation, you can begin to understand his hoof defects
His hooves were not trimmed for the first part of his life.
So they grew long like Aladdin's slippers but not straight ahead but obliquely forward and to the side.
looking from the ground surface, the left hand (medial) heel grows from the inside covering the frog and sole to the outside of the hoof..
From the front, the fold is the Outside (lateral) wall. Growing from the coronary band and turning abruptly 180º. Beneath it is sole tissue and the inside wall.
Part post trim. The dense harder outer layer of the outside wall is visible by the darker line. this is followed by the rest of the hoof wall and the lighter line of the sole and finally at the bottom is the frog visible on the outside wall. Danny never recovered from the neglect that left him in this state. I was able to give him increased mobility for several years despite his hoof deformities being beyond correction.
