Nail Bind

Nail bind is the name given to the bruising of the soft tissues of the hoof which is caused when a nail is placed too close to the laminae of a thin walled hoof. The presence of the nail puts excessive pressure on the laminae and causes localized bruising.

The horse is observed to be lame a day or so after shoeing, with heat in the foot, especially over the problem nail. Application of hoof testers to the area around the nail will be painful.

Nail Pricks

A nail prick is caused when a nail placed inside the white line penetrates the sensitive tissues causing haemorrhaging and consequently infection.

     Nail Puncture

Any puncture wound to the hoof requires urgent veterinary attention. In a case where the nail has penetrated into the coffin joint, navicular bursa or the tendon sheath, an infection of any of these structures can have disastrous or fatal consequences.

NB. It is imperative to seek veterinary advice regarding protection against tetanus.
