A comprehensive instructional video is available and is recommended viewing. The Equine Digit Support System is an advanced and versatile remedial shoeing system which when used correctly will reward the user with immediate and satisfying results. This introduction is intended as a simplified overview of some procedures. A fully instructional video is available and is recommended viewing before applying the EDSS. Many components of the kit are reusable and replacement individual components of the kit are available from TFP.The example shown is a laminitic, which had Styrofoam, applied during the acute stage of lameness. The condition has stabilised to the point where supportive shoeing is appropriate. Although it is essential that the Farrier and Veterinary Surgeon work together, it is not essential for a radiograph to be taken purely for shoe placement.
1. Working through the enclosed lameness workup sheet and using hoof testers, a clear indication of the region and level of lameness is achieved. The results are recorded on the work up sheet. Painful areas are marked.
2. When the site(s) of lameness are established and marked, the two-part impression material is mixed in equal amounts and applied.
3. A level hard "impression" pad is then attached with tape enabling the impression compound to set. This process takes just a few minutes.
4. After a short time the impression pad is removed and the compound is then trimmed to position. This provides uniform support to less painful areas.
Handy Tip. Pre drill nail holes through the EDSS pad. This works well for all pads, consider pitch and try to avoid drilling the Anvil!
5. The EDSS shoe and attached pad can now be fixed in position. The setscrew holding the pad to the shoe helps seat the pad away from the sole. Once the shoe is nailed-on, the wedge shaped frog inserts can be fixed. Shown in this picture is the smallest frog insert. Power tools are advantageous!.
6. The frog inserts come in six different sizes allowing for a range of adjustments on a trial basis until increased comfort is achieved. This is the largest. All fixings are included.
7. Once the optimal height frog insert is established, the corresponding lateral wedge rails are attached to the shoe providing additional support and preventing sprains or strains.
8.The system is fully adjustable throughout the rehabilitative phase and until more conventional shoeing is appropriate.
In addition to the instructional video, the Book New Hope for Soundness introduces the Natural Balance principles from which the EDSS has been developed and is recommended reading, go TFPOnline now More information on Natural Balance? Return to the top of this page?
